A Different Side of Costa Rica: The Calm of San José

When people think of Costa Rica, they often imagine beaches, tropical jungles, and mountain escapes. And they’re not wrong, the country is full of breathtaking nature. During times like Semana Santa, many head straight to the coast or the mountains to experience that side of pura vida.

But there’s another side to Costa Rica a quieter, more subtle experience right here in San José.

Being in the capital doesn’t mean missing out. In fact, it offers something different. Early in the morning, when the streets are still calm and the city is just waking up, you can take a peaceful walk through nearby parks, enjoy a coffee in a relaxed atmosphere, or simply observe the rhythm of local life.

And just beyond the city, nature is never far away. Within a short drive, you can find yourself surrounded by mountains, fresh air, and green landscapes. It’s a different kind of escape, less crowded, more personal, and deeply connected to everyday life in Costa Rica.

At our hotel, located in the heart of San José, we’ve had the privilege of experiencing this balance since 2010. While many of our guests explore the beaches and forests, others discover the beauty of slowing down and seeing the city in a different light.

Right now, many people are living that beach life and it’s wonderful. But here, we experience something else: a calm, authentic, and grounded version of pura vida.

Because at the end of the day, pura vida is not just a place it’s a feeling, a culture, and a way of living that you can experience anywhere in Costa Rica.
